Barranco Camp

Kilimanjaro National Park

About This Accommodation

Barranco Camp is a scenic and crucial stop on Mount Kilimanjaro, located at an altitude of approximately 3,900 meters. It is situated in a valley near the Great Barranco Wall, a challenging section of the Machame Route. The camp is known for its stunning views of the mountain and valley, making it a favorite among climbers. It serves as a key acclimatization point for trekkers on their journey to the summit.

The Great Barranco Wall

The most famous feature of Barranco Camp is the Great Barranco Wall, a steep cliff that trekkers must climb. This section is often described as a rock wall that requires climbers to use their hands and feet, similar to rock climbing. The climb is considered one of the most challenging parts of the Machame Route. After conquering the wall, the path becomes more varied, with a mix of ups and downs.

Location and Route

Barranco Camp is the third stop on the Machame Route, which is also known as the “Whiskey Route." It is typically reached from the Shira Cave Camp or the Lava Tower Camp. From Barranco Camp, trekkers usually proceed to Karanga Camp and then to the final acclimatization camp, Barafu Camp. The camp is located in a semi-desert area of the mountain.
