At Kilimanjaro Explore, the safety and well-being of our climbers are our highest priorities. One of the most important preparations for your Mount Kilimanjaro adventure is obtaining comprehensive travel insurance that specifically covers high-altitude trekking.

Many standard travel insurance policies do not automatically include coverage for trekking at elevations above 6,000 meters. Therefore, we strongly recommend that all climbers carefully review their policy details and ensure they include emergency medical expenses, trip interruption, and emergency evacuation coverage.

For travelers from many countries around the world, we recommend World Nomads Travel Insurance. Their policies are designed for adventurous travelers and may provide coverage for activities such as high-altitude trekking, emergency medical treatment, and evacuation services.

Before purchasing any policy, please read the policy wording carefully and confirm that your chosen plan provides coverage for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

For Kilimanjaro, the relevant “specific cover” typically includes:

High-altitude trekking cover
This is the key one. It means the policy explicitly allows trekking up to Mount Kilimanjaro’s elevation (~5,895m). If it is not stated, the activity is usually excluded.

Emergency medical treatment cover
Covers hospital treatment, medication, and emergency care if altitude sickness or injury occurs during the climb.

Emergency evacuation and rescue cover
Includes helicopter evacuation from the mountain or stretcher evacuation to a medical facility. On Kilimanjaro, this is a major cost risk.

Repatriation cover
If a climber must be transported back to their home country due to medical reasons.

Trip interruption / cancellation cover
Covers financial loss if the climb is cut short due to illness, injury, or unforeseen events.

Important Reminder

All climbers joining Kilimanjaro Explore are required to have valid travel insurance. Proof of insurance may be requested before the climb begins. Adequate coverage provides peace of mind and helps ensure that you are protected throughout your adventure.

If you have any questions regarding insurance requirements, our team will be happy to assist you.
